Let me start today’s thoughts with a few questions. Do you ever feel like you are living in a dark place? Have you found that sometimes you see the world around you as filled with darkness, without any light? Have you noticed the darkness this week? Have you had any encounters with people who you feel have been overtaken by the darkness? Well my intention today is to get you to lift your eyes and realise that we are people of the light! Ephesians 5:8 says, “…for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light.”
Our study of John 1 on Sunday reminded us that Jesus came and brought life and light into the world. The incarnation, light coming into darkness, gave people the opportunity to see in the middle of a dark world. During his earthly ministry Christ expanded that plan by commissioning those who have believed and received the light, to be light in the dark places where God has placed us. If you are in that group of people who have believed and received the light then you are a child of the light, and commissioned to shine that light wherever you are.
It doesn’t take much to see and recognise the darkness of sin around us, all you have to do is open your eyes. The question is how do you shine the light into that darkness? I believe that the answer is to look to “The Light of the world” and follow his example of being light in the world He came to. Jesus spoke truth and lived truth in his earthly life, and as he did that his behaviour demonstrated a way to live that was counter-cultural in his day. Everywhere he went Jesus made a difference by loving and interacting with those people who were outcasts in the culture as well as loving and interacting with the rich and powerful as well. Everyone was a valued person in the Lord eyes, who needed light and life. We must live like our Lord and spread that light.
My last question is how are you being the light in your world this week? Seek to follow the lead of our Lord and be the light where God has placed you. I look forward to hearing some of your ‘light’ stories!
